I made this one as a fift for the boys on the YouTube channel "All The Gear". I met up with Ethan at Shedfest from the channel who had some tools for me for a little side project of his own. Absolutely awesome day out and meeting someone who I watch all the time was wicked. He was an outstandingly lovely bloke.
My interpritation of their YouTube logo come to life in 3D in a freestanding metal structure.
I'll get the ball rolling with what their logo actually is. The background is based on a topological map with the lettering over the top in a diamond shape. As for posting their logo on my website. Lawyers, please use the contact form here.
To begin, I wanted to look for an appropriate base to mount this on. What better than a gear. It was nice and chunky. It was weight enough to hold up the logo mounted above. Reaching up to the logo itself I twisted a spanner by heating it in my forge and putting it in the vice and a good old twist and a bash to make it curved.
To the base I hand stamped some aluminium which reads "ALL THE GEAR, NO IDEA, EST 2024". Weirdly enough in April 2024 which is when I began my welding journey.
(looking at the back) To begin the actual logo, I shaped 2 V shaped pieces of rebar. I then welded them together to make the diamond shape. This gave me the outline I needed to begin the topological map aspect of the design. For this I used the big draw of mild steel nails I have got. I carefully shaped these and laid them out to try and match the logo as much as possible before I fired up the welder and got the sparks flying and into permanent position.
The spanner part of this I used I believe it is a set of valve clearance spanner set. I welded a cross piece on this to make it look like the letter A.
The vertical part of the "T" is a lovely brass handle from a screwdriver. I like the use of a different colour on the logo. I topped it off with a nut and bolt. I left the washer that was on there as I thought people would naturally fiddle with it for fun.
The head of a spanner that I used for this wasn't G enough for me. I decided to forge the mouth in slightly so I could top it off with a section of threaded bar.
The hand over - After some dodgy signal and many text messages struggling to get through to each other due to the location of Shedfest. I finally found my way to the backstage doors. There an amazing marshal went to go and find Ethan for me who kindly came out to speak with me. We had a brief chat about the project he wanted to make and I threw some ideas forward for this. He gave me a big bag of tools for the project he was wanting to do. I gave him the mini "All the Gear" Emblem which he seemed very pleased with. I noticed a queue forming behind me of fans and kids waiting to meet him so said my goodbyes and went on to enjoy Shedfest in its entirety.
I will place a link here to his main project once I have done it justice with its own page!
